An apostille is a certificate that simplifies the recognition of public documents between countries party to the Hague Convention of 5 October 1961. A document bearing an apostille can be used in other member countries without further consular legalisation.
Who issues it in Türkiye?
In Türkiye, the apostille is issued by different authorities depending on the document type:
- Governorships and district governorships for administrative documents
- Justice commissions of first-instance courts for judicial documents
How it relates to translation
Sometimes the original document needs the apostille; sometimes the notarised translation does. The correct order depends on the requirements of the destination country and institution.
For countries that are not party to the convention, consular legalisation is used instead of an apostille.
